The Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia is now accepting applications for the MEXT (Japanese Government) Scholarship 2027, funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. This program offers fully funded opportunities for Ethiopian students to pursue higher education in Japan.

Applicants can apply to one of the following tracks:

  • Research Students (Postgraduate)
  • Undergraduate Students
  • College of Technology Students
  • Only these programs are processed through the Embassy in Ethiopia.

Applicants must be Ethiopian citizens applying through the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia
Non-Ethiopian applicants must apply via the Japanese embassy in their home country

  • All required documents must be submitted by postal mail only to:
  • Embassy of Japan
  • Cultural and Press Division (MEXT Scholarship)
  • P.O. Box 5650
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Applications sent by hand or email will not be accepted.
  • All documents must arrive before May 29, 2026.


⚠️ Key Requirements


Applications must be complete and typed
Use A4 paper (vertical format) for all documents
Attach photos by gluing, not stapling
Academic documents must include official university stamps
Recommendation letters must have original signatures and stamps
Submitted documents will not be returned

The selection process consists of multiple stages:

  • Document Screening
  • Only complete and eligible applications will be reviewed
  • Written Examination (June 2026)
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited
  • Interview (July 2026)
  • Conducted in person at the Embassy in Addis Ababa
  • Primary Screening Result
  • Successful candidates receive a certificate to apply to Japanese universities
  • Final Selection (Tokyo)
  • Final evaluation is conducted in Japan based on global competition
